Diversity and inclusion

Every type can make a difference.

With thousands of people donating to our service every day, and thousands more working with us to make the most of those donations, everyone can make a real impact.

A workplace full of people with different ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds is a stronger, more creative workplace. That’s why we’re dedicated to actively shaping a culture that embraces and empowers all types of people, by celebrating diversity and driving inclusion forwards.

Equality objectives and reporting

Every year, we set equality objectives and measure our progress with specific targets.

We also publish regular reports to assess equalities in our organisation, on topics including:

  • gender pay gap
  • Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES)
  • Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES)
  • our public sector equality duty
  • Equality Impact Assessments

You can find the latest versions of our equality objectives and reports on the NHSBT website (this link will open in a new window).

Our staff networks

Staff networks play a vital role in helping us champion diversity and inclusion, and supporting our diverse team, as well as our patients and donors. They offer a safe, supportive space for all our colleagues to share their stories and talk about any issues they’re facing at work or at home.

With our wide range of networks, there’s a place for everyone to find and offer support and build lasting friendships, so everyone feels welcome and supported here at NHSBT.

Group for Racial Equality (GRacE) Network

The GRacE Network is an employee group that addresses issues related to racial equality and feeds into our diversity agenda. It also offers advice, and guidance on developing our policies to help promote an inclusive culture.

Its goal is to give everyone a space to connect, socialise, and support each other on issues relating to our communities.

LGBT+ Network

Our LGBT+ Network is about connecting and supporting our LGBT+ colleagues and promoting a work environment where everyone can come into work without worrying about being judged.

It plays a big part in championing inclusivity and celebrating our diverse workforce, as well as the communities we serve.

Women’s Network

Our Women's Network is a community dedicated to celebrating and supporting women in STEM careers and across our workplace.

It’s a space that aims to bring the issues women may face in the workplace to light, promote strategies that make career development more accessible to women, and offer pathways to development and career satisfaction.

It offers a safe place for our colleagues to share their knowledge and experiences, and celebrate the skills and talents of the women who work here.

Disability and Wellbeing Network (DAWN)

The Disability and Wellbeing Network (DAWN) is an open and supportive environment for colleagues with disabilities or health conditions to find support and advice.

Its goal is to:

  • improve attitudes towards disability in the workplace
  • raise awareness of disability issues
  • make sure anyone with a disability or health condition has the same equity of access to support, career progression and development opportunities as everybody else
Neurodiversity Network

Established in 2022, the Neurodiversity Network is a space for neurodivergent colleagues, and colleagues who work with or care for someone who is neurodivergent, to share their experiences, find support, and offer advice on how we can make our workplace more neuro-inclusive.

Neurodivergent colleagues often face very unique and specific challenges in the workplace. This network is all about raising awareness of these issues and improving the recruitment and retention of neurodiverse talent.
