Rewards and benefits

How we give back to you.

The contribution you make through your work is incredible, so we’ve made sure the way we reward you is incredible, too.

As well as offering a range of fantastic benefits, we’re committed to supporting flexible working patterns and providing a fair and transparent pay structure.

Pay and working patterns

Fair and equal pay

Our pay and grading is supported by the NHS Job Evaluation and Grading Scheme.

You’ll also automatically become a member of the NHS Pension Scheme as soon as you start with us, if you’re eligible. This is a defined benefit scheme and is not dependent on investment returns.

If you are not eligible to join the NHS Pension Scheme, we’ll provide an alternative.

Flexible working

We take a positive approach to flexible working, and we know that your needs might change a lot throughout your career. That’s why we’re dedicated to creating a working environment where you can balance your work and home life.

Depending on your role, we can offer a range of flexible working options, including hybrid working, compressed hours and part time job share roles. Many of our roles can be done remotely, but we also have centres based across the country, giving you a variety of workspaces to choose from.

Annual leave

There’s more to life than work, so we actively encourage all our people to make the most of their holiday allowance, which is a generous 27 days per year. This rises to 29 days after 5 years here, and 33 days after 10. On top of that, you’ll be able to make the most of bank holidays.

If you join us part-time, your leave will be pro rata. And if you’ve worked in the NHS before joining NHS Blood and Transplant, this will count towards your higher leave entitlement.

Carer support

We’re dedicated to supporting any of our people who find themselves caring for someone outside of work.

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is full of information, advice and guidance to help you through all the tough decisions and processes that come with caring – from finding care homes, fees and transfer of assets, to providing support for caring at home and looking after your wellbeing.

Parental leave

We offer 4 types of parental leave:

  • maternity leave
  • adoption leave
  • maternity support leave (previously paternity leave)
  • shared parental leave

Benefits and recognition

Selling annual leave

You can sell up to 37.5 hours of leave (pro rata for part-time employees) in total during any leave year.

Blue light and health service discounts

At NHSBT, you’ll have access to a range of discounts through the NHS blue light and health service discount schemes.

Salary sacrifice lease cars

If you need to travel regularly in your role, we can offer a personal lease car though a salary sacrifice scheme.

Season ticket loans

We offer season ticket loans for travel to and from work.
