Work experience programmes

Science-based work experience for students aged 16 to 18.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) offers an annual science-based work experience programme at some of our centres. It is coordinated by our Scientific and Clinical Training and Education team.

The programme is for students aged 16 to 18 years old (years 12 to 13) who are interested in scientific or laboratory careers. Students must be sponsored to participate by their school or college.

How to apply

Applications have now closed for 2025 and will reopen again later in the year or early next year for 2026.

We are not able to provide feedback on the progress of individual applications. If you have not received an offer of a place by Friday 2 May, your application was unfortunately not successful.

Our placements

In 2025, we are offering the following programmes:

  • Bristol (Filton): 14 to 18 July 2025
  • Bristol (Filton): 21 to 25 July 2025
  • London (Tooting): 2 to 6 June 2025

What to expect

Successful applicants can expect:

  • to learn about the different departments that support our life saving work and how we support the wider NHS
  • to meet colleagues in a variety of scientific and caring roles within our organisation include nursing and donor/patient care positions
  • a hands-on practical in our on-site training lab
  • an advice session to learn about careers in science, medicine and/or nursing
