Logistics

It takes all types to deliver life-saving donations.

It takes one person to donate, and our huge logistics team to get that donation to the people who need it.

We have fleets of vehicles driven by hundreds of drivers, who work various shift patterns to make a difference every minute of the day, year round.

They work hard to get those donations to centres, team bases, blood collection venues, hospitals and research labs across England.

Our teams across the country make sure every donation is stored safely and transported smoothly. So, when you join this team, you’ll play a vital part in getting donations to the people who really need them.

Roles in logistics

Transport

Our transport teams work 24/7 to make sure donations get to both our teams within NHSBT, and patients in the NHS and private sector. They not only collect blood and plasma from our donor sessions, but also deliver blood products to hospitals along with other ancillary products, using our fleet of over 120 vehicles.

Information:

Emergency deliveries

Sometimes blood components are needed at very short notice for clinical emergencies. That’s when we use blue lights and horns. Our drivers are all blue light trained, with rigorous initial training and refresher courses every two years.

It’s important that we keep not just the public and ourselves safe, but also the vital products that we carry. It might be the only available bag of blood that’s the perfect match for the patient in need.

Fleet services

Our fleet services provide and maintain contracts for over 300 liveried vehicles, as well as maintaining the contract for the NHS Blood and Transplant lease car scheme. We also cover occupational road risk, driver training, insurance and legislation.

Services and resources

Our services and resources team looks at how we can meet the needs of our departments.

They do that by developing and maintaining our transport management system, which we use to plan our journeys around the products we’re transporting.

Warehousing

Our warehousing teams work from three remote ‘hubs’ with over 500 bulk pallet locations.

Their role is to receive and distribute all our stock and supplies, and manage these through our procurement system.

"Working at NHS Blood and Transplant as a Logistics driver, you know you’re doing something good – we deliver products that save lives."

Make a difference in a logistics role

Without our logistics teams, we wouldn’t be able to get vital donations to the people who need them.

If you join us, you’ll make an impact by making sure we can meet our patients’ needs, and keeping our donations safe on their way to save lives.
